Nepean is a unique community within Ottawa. It was established in 1792 and remained its own entity until it was incorporated as a city on November 24, 1978. It was an independent city until amalgamation with the Regional Municipality of Ottawa–Carleton. Then, in 2001, it became part of Ottawa. However, the name “Nepean” continues in common usage about the area. Many people still say they live in the city of Nepean.
